Cottage Core Blanket

There’s been A LOT of tutorials lately on the Little Miss Drop Stitch YouTube channel and I can finally reveal the reason!

Introducing the Cottage Core Blanket. Delve into the peaceful English countryside with designs inspired by the flora, fauna and homes of the idyllic English countryside village.

This pattern really is for everyone. I have designed it in such a way that beginners can go through each square, progressing with new techniques. Experienced knitters can whizz away through their favourite square designs and discover new favourites.

I have intentionally designed the Cottage Core Blanket with every knitter in mind. The written pattern itself gently introduces knitting abbreviations, which increase in frequency as the pattern goes along. Squares which require a chart also start off with matching written instructions. If that wasn’t enough to dispel fear from novice knitters, then every single technique has a video tutorial over on our YouTube.

Yes, every single thing! Each stitch technique, to casting on and off, as well as sewing up in mattress stitch…it’s all there.

If some of the squares aren’t your cup of tea, the beauty of this blanket is that you can make as many or as few of each design as you like…the perfect opportunity to be creative mix and matching. The total grams and metres for each square design are included, so you can confidently estimate if you have enough yarn…or need another trip to the wool shop!

I have used wool I bought from Bergen Train Station in Norway; this blanket is designed for DK weight yarn on 4mm needles. The beauty of doing squares is that you can use any size yarn and needles, as long as it’s a square at the end! So, you could use US Worsted weight yarn on 4mm needles, or the suggested 4.5mm needles for a slightly larger size. Another idea is to play around with 4ply (fingering) weight, such as left over sock yarn or cotton for a lightweight spring blanket.

You may have gathered by now that we love a stash buster at Little Miss Drop Stitch. Blankets can take up a lot of yarn, so it was important to me that the blanket design allowed for using up oddments, without looking odd.

I love English cottage core, however, I am partial to a pop of colour. I added turquoise and lime green and they don’t look out of place at all!

I really hope you enjoy the Cottage Core blanket and I can’t wait to see your interpretations and colours. Do share with us your in progress or finished makes, either via the website contact, Ravelry or on social media.

Meet the Squares

Take care, Rachel G x
